~Peggy O'Mara
When I was 23, my boyfriend said something to me that changed my world forever...
"Things happen to people and they get over it. Well, unless it happens when you are a child, then it is harder to get over."
That comment caused me to have a rush of feelings so intense, I had to hang up the phone.
His comment had caused me to recall a repressed memory of abuse. In that moment, I connected for the first time how that abuse had resulted in my insecurity and low self-worth. I'd spent my entire life so far not knowing how to say no or how to stand up for myself. I'd tolerated emotional, mental, and even 1 incident of physical abuse.
After making that connection, I decided to rebuild my self-worth and to learn how to recognize red flags, set healthy boundaries, and make my needs a priority.
While working through my new perspective and understanding, I realized how the words that parents use and how the connection (or lack thereof) in your home as a child has an impact on emotional health, resiliency, and feelings of self-worth.
The discoveries I made eventually led me to my work today…
Think about your childhood, and things that happened, whether big or small. How does this impact your choices today? This could be in your decision-making, boundary setting, or relationship choices.
Maybe you have been to therapy to overcome these feelings or maybe you have just been suffering on your own.
But now you’re a parent (or about to be a parent) and you’re worried that your children will have similar feelings of low self-worth to overcome.
If you’re ready to see how we might work together, take a look at my services here.

Training and Certification as a Human Behavior Consultant in Association with the Fitzgerald Institute of Lifelong Learning. This has been a game changer for me! The program focuses on the importance of understanding that profiles matter. Understanding styles, perspectives, preferences, and needs empowers us to discover and explore possibilities, rather than manage misunderstanding or challenging behavior. We look at strengths and understand that all children are perfectly designed and we must work in ways that ensures that design is visible, valued, and supported. We focus on the importance of relationships and the importance of the interaction between the caregiver and child. I am so excited to be able to educate caregivers on this valuable information!
