Active Listening
Dec 18, 2020
Recently, I wrote a blog about how important it is for us to have deeper discussions with people so we can build and strengthen connections with each other.
I write about the importance of communication a lot because it is the foundation of having healthy relationships while expanding our compassion and understanding.
The definition of communication is a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior.
Active listening is a key ingredient to productive communication. When we are focused on our own reply, we have essentially stepped out of the communication process. We have not been able to receive the other person's point of view or information.
By truly listening, we learn more about each other, we learn a different perspective we may not have considered before, and naturally, we mature in our thinking.
Another great benefit of active listening is that we set a good example to the other person so that we can also be truly heard. When people feel truly heard, what we are experiencing is being valued and respected (which everyone deserves.)
Listening to understand brings us closer to each other. The value we feel will increase overall self-worth and benefit us all!
