Words of Affirmation

perspectives Jun 04, 2021

Children are continuously learning new skills. Words of affirmation and encouragement are what help shape the belief system of our kids. When we punish them for acting out or doing something wrong - this too, shapes their belief system in themselves and the world around them.

When a child is in doubt we need to be careful how we handle it. Teaching them the skill of Possibility Thinking can be a game changer. We can give them space to encourage their curiosity about different solutions. We can give them honesty about how it's okay that if we mess up we can try again. We can remember to tell them when they do a good job and are improving their skills.

Here are some examples of what we can tell our kids to help increase their self-worth:

  • I appreciate you.
  • I believe in you.
  • I'm impressed with the effort you gave this.
  • How do you feel about your accomplishment?
  • That was a courageous choice.
  • I'd like to hear your thoughts.
  • Tell me what you learned about this.

When an adult shows they believe in a child... confidence builds and children learn to believe in themselves.

One more thing.. There are 3 words you can never say too much to a child...

"I love you"
