Schedule "worry time"
Nov 27, 2020
It's so valuable to understand that worrying is a big waste of time. Not only for the things that we cannot change in general, but also for the things we cannot change right now.
I learned this lesson many years ago by a dear friend, Kevin. He was going through a stressful situation. It was a Friday night and we were out playing pool having a great time.
A moment came up where I wondered how he could be having such a good time with all he was dealing with. I almost didn't bring it up, but decided to ask him because I was curious.
His response has stuck with me over all of these years. Kevin said:
"there is nothing that I can do about this situation now. To think about it would only ruin my weekend. I scheduled some time Monday at 3 to focus on this problem. Until then, I am not going to worry about it."
MIND BLOWN.
This was the first time the concept of scheduling "worry time" had occurred to me. And the reality that worrying now would only ruin the moment hit me like a brick. This was a big AHA moment for me.
As it usually does, the situation worked itself out. Instead of having a weekend of wasted worry, he was able to have a weekend of fun that created great memories.
I feel so lucky to have learned this lesson so many years ago. It has really helped me to understand that when there is nothing to do about a situation, worrying about it is truly a waste of time. And, it has helped so many of my clients throughout the years.
