Roots & Wings

perspectives Dec 17, 2018

When I was 24 years old, I was out walking with my mom and talking about how I wanted to move from Massachusetts to California. I looked over and my mom was silently crying. I was taken aback and said to her “do you not want me to talk about this with you?” She replied “I want you to share this with me, you just have to realize that it’s a parent’s job to give their children roots and wings, and it’s just a lot harder to give you the wings.”

WHAT I LEARNED:

Roots are the understanding about where we were raised, loved, and cared for. It’s important to give children this strong foundation so they can have the stability, security, and confidence to make their way in the world.

Wings alternatively, allow our children the ability to discover their path, explore their interests, likes, dislikes, environments etc.. By giving wings, we empower them to find happiness, to be successful, and become their authentic selves.

Both roots & wings are equally important when raising emotionally healthy children.

It may be hard to let your children fly, but the rewards of

watching them soar

are beautiful and so profound!
