Recognize Your Potential

perspectives Feb 18, 2022

As we age, we tend to get settled in our ways. We have a way of living that is familiar to us... we continue to hold on to beliefs and behaviors that may not be helping us improve our lives.

When we begin to challenge our outdated (and possibly unhealthy) beliefs and behaviors we can change how we see the world and create experiences that will positively impact our future.

There are concrete steps we can practice to change our thinking:

  1. Identify our outdated (or self-limiting) beliefs. Listen to what you tell yourself about how you feel in any given situation or on an every day basis.
  2. Determine where these thoughts came from. Is this belief something you grew up hearing in your home? Is this behavior something you have learned as a survival tactic?
  3. Assess your beliefs & values in different situations. What works in one situation might not work in another.
  4. Establish realistic and meaningful goals. Take one belief or behavior that you want to change and envision what that new behavior looks like.
  5. Challenge your beliefs. Start doing one activity that challenges that belief or behavior no matter how uncomfortable it feels. Instead of going through life on auto pilot, write down one thought from your goal list and put it someplace where you can be reminded of it daily.

What happens is that you will begin to see situations more clearly.

You will start responding to situations differently.

You will start to recognize your own power and potential.
