Serious Play

perspectives Dec 17, 2018

We can do what we set our minds to. If our minds are limitless, then so are our possibilities. This is called possibility thinking. Limitations are things that we have learned, and we should do better by not passing these limitations down to our children. How do we develop possibility thinking?

Play More!!

When children are playing, they are actually developing their fine and gross motor skills, learning how to handle emotions with others, learning communication techniques and…..

…..developing possibility thinking.

More schools are getting rid of recess time. More children are spending time on their screens. And, more focus is on achieving academic greatness.

While academics are important, children will be more well-rounded, creative, and aware when play is included. Not to mention, they will develop better social competencies that help them become more emotionally healthy individuals. Well developed social competencies give children confidence, self-worth, and ultimately a better chance at a happy and successful future.

So let your children play! This is the work of childhood.

Thank you, Mr. Rogers! I’ll leave you with a little fun fact:

A 3 year old toddler’s brain is twice as active as an adult’s brain. What children need most is loving care and new experiences like talking, singing, playing, and reading to build their brain.
