Why do kids need hugs? A firm hug can help children feel cared about and supported. The physical act of hugging your child increases oxytocin levels(the bonding hormone.) The release of this hormone puts your child in a relaxed state, decreasing the level of cortisol (the stress hormone.)

There is also evidence that oxytocin can boost the immune system.

Oxytocin is known to increase levels of feel good hormones such as serotonin and dopamine, which is why it has such calming effects. It reduces depression and anxiety and may have a positive effect on attention disorders.

Hugs can improve physical & emotional well-being.

  • Offer words of encouragement
  • Do something nice
  • Spend quality time with them
  • Listen with interest
  • Plan a fun impromptu activity
  • Play
