Grass is Greener

perspectives Nov 20, 2020

You may believe the grass is greener on the other side... but it's really greener where you water it.

I had a client who loved doing interviews with elderly couples. He found couples that were happily married for over 50 years and he would ask them "what is the secret to your successful relationship?"

One man answered, "I realized a long time ago that the grass is greener where you water it."

When my client shared this story it was profound to me because it's so true. We tend to think the grass is greener on the other side, but if we take the time to communicate, share what's important to us, talk about our needs, and learn about what the other person needs; we can remain happy and close.

Other ways to nurture your relationships are spending quality time together, laughing and playing, remembering what brought you together, and not assuming the other person can read your mind.

That's what we can do to keep a relationship special.

Watering our own grass is how we take care and appreciate what we do have.
