Get Out of Your Own Way

perspectives Sep 24, 2021

Do you have a need for control? Do you have a fear of failure? Do you find yourself procrastinating a lot? Well, you may be getting in your own way (also known as self-sabotage.)

There are many reasons we do this, and often we don't even know it's happening. We create our reality, but we do not always see our own part in why we aren't moving forward or getting the things we want in life.

Self-sabotage is a form of self-protection, but it is holding us back from our true potential. Our behaviors align with our beliefs. If we don’t believe we have the capacity of living to our true potential, our actions will hold us back to confirm our beliefs.

We use our past experiences to dictate our behaviors in present and future situations. In reality, every situation is different and we should approach it with an open mind.

Some additional tell-tale signs of getting in your own way (self-sabotage):

  • Blaming, shaming, complaining
  • Avoiding challenging situations
  • Picking fights with family or loved ones
  • Excessive negative self-talk
  • Repeating unhealthy relationship patterns

Becoming aware of times when you do these things and asking if these behaviors are helpful to your success is the first step in getting out of your own way. Acknowledge when this happens and be open to discovering your part in it.

Identify & confront the negative way you speak to yourself and others.

Let go of what you think you know.

Take a deep breath and a moment to recognize what you really want for your life.

Get out of your own way.
