Continue to Rise
Aug 06, 2021This is an important lesson to not only take on ourselves, but to teach our children as well.
Too often, we see failure as something to criticize in ourselves and others. This limited belief stops us from moving forward, from having new experiences, and especially from learning new life skills.
Failure is necessary to learning. It is a part of our personal growth. Even when we fail at something in our professional world, it has an impact on our personal belief system. How are we going to let that failure impact us?
We have a choice. We can give up and choose to believe we can't do it... or, we can get up, learn from it, and try again.
If we think about the accomplished lives of people we admire, whether it be an athlete, an actor, a scientist, a religious leader, or someone close to us, they have fallen many times in their quest to learn their skill or craft. Even professional athletes that have honed their ability don't 'catch the ball' every time. What distinguishes them is their ability to get back up, learn from their mistakes, and improve their game... which will still never be perfect.
Even some schools are now encouraging kids to "fail harder." This motivates children to try new things and create more experiences in order to learn new skills and feel a sense of accomplishment.
By teaching our children to keep getting up, they learn:
- Resiliency
- Self-worth isn't tied to failure
- They can always keep going
- They are stronger than they realize
- Confidence
- Patience (read more about the 4-stages of learning)
