Baby Steps

We tend to get overwhelmed by things we want or need to get done. The overwhelm can cause us to bury our heads in the sand and never start. We can't meet our goals if we don't begin somewhere. By starting, even if we take baby steps, we will progress and eventually get it done.

And... we will likely make mistakes along the way.

Mistakes help you learn to make the final result better. They are lessons on how to improve.  By taking action, we learn from our mistakes and become equipped with more knowledge and increased skills that we didn't have before we started.

A sign that a project is overwhelming is avoidance. I've been there before and have learned some tricks along the way to decrease the overwhelm and get started.

Break it down: Ask yourself how you can break it down to smaller steps. If the steps still feel overwhelming, break it down some more. A step could be as simple as making a phone call, making a list, organizing a small section of a larger area, or creating an outline. If creating an outline still feels too big, break it down to brainstorming ideas through journaling or voice memos. When you have the steps broken down, even if you only have a few minutes, you can look at your list and knock something off it. Before you know it, you will be done.

Time: Depending on the project, it may be something that we could just spend 20 minutes a day on. If you don't have 20 minutes, start with five. Your progress will motivate you and you will start finding more time to finish.

Grouping: Once you have a list of steps, you can group similar steps with each other. For example, make all your phone calls in one sitting, run errands on the same day, focus time on only doing paperwork.

Grouping Examples:

  1. List making!
  2. Things that can only be done at home
  3. Things that can only be done out of the home
  4. Phone calls
  5. Computer work
  6. Paperwork

Start that project. Write that book. Take that class. Organize that room. There is no better time than the present.

You got this!
